I’d love to be the type of writer who can sit down at a computer and compose an inspired, thought out and well edited piece from start to finish, and create a beautiful portfolio from the serenity of a well decorated home office.

Alas, I am not.

My writing process is messy because truthfully, I am messy. I like to prop my laptop on a pillow while I sit on the couch. It’s also pretty common for me to have the TV on in the background as I work. It just fits who I am, and maybe these less traditional writing process’ will work for you as well.

The Notes App Is Your Best Friend

So often I’ve heard of other writers actually getting out of bed in the middle of the night to write because of a stroke of inspiration they absolutely had to roll with.

Um, no.

I’ll admit, I get a lot of ideas at night, conveniently while I’m snuggled in bed, but let’s tell the truth here, I’m not getting up. Which is why the Notes app is so handy for me. It has caught so many of my passing thoughts, which have ultimately turned into many of my finished projects. You can even try voice dictation if speaking aloud works better for you.

Quiet vs Chaos

Obviously, organization and focus are important when writing a report or an essay and those things are commonly accomplished when you have a quiet place to work.

However, I crank out some of my best work while multitasking with multiple interruptions. Perhaps because it forces me to get my thoughts and ideas out quickly so I’m not dwelling on the right word to use or editing as I write. Ultimately, I can go back later to clean it up and make it perfect.

My main job is in the customer service industry, and I have been known to jot down a few lines here and there between guests. Try this method as you cook dinner or clean your house. You never know where your mind will wander when doing menial tasks.

Keep Your Writing Brain On

Always be open and on the lookout for your next great topic. Research a product your best friend just bought. Allow yourself to learn from normal everyday conversations with those around you, form an opinion and start a new discussion on your blog. Observe how others look and behave. Grow your own inspiration from the frustrations you face or from the accomplishments of loved ones.

Any instance that triggers an emotional response can become a meaningful addition to your portfolio.

When You Can’t Write; Read

Writers block is real and something every writer encounters from time to time. It does not make you a bad writer and it certainly doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try anyway but to help you get the train rolling again, read. More specifically, read something you normally would not. If you are used to reading how-to essays, try a short story. If you typically like fiction, try a memoir or some local news articles. Stepping out of your comfort zone allows a fresh prospective which can jump start your writing process and revive your blog.

We all have a different process when we create, but by allowing ourselves to be inspired by the world around us, everyday situations can be everyday opportunities to become better writers.
